Collio Bianco 2020

Martissima

Italy

After earning a degree in viticulture and enology from the university at Udine, Marta Venica plunged into a range of wine experiences, working for Ceretto, Dönnhoff, Pierre Peters, Elisabetta Foradori and Bodega Chacra, which acted as turning point for Marta to launch her own project.

Oliver from The Wine Shop chose Martissima’s Collio Bianco because of its epic backstory. “Picture this: vineyards rooted in chalk and limestone from an old seafloor, perched on a hill that was once an underwater paradise. This wine captures the Water theme for me perfectly, showing the essence of how time influenced the shaping of the land. Each sip is like drinking history, blending sea breeze freshness and bursts of fruit from its grapes Friulano, Ribolla Gialla and Malvasia.

Sag Olazsriesling 2021

Peter Wetzer

Austria

Peter Wetzer grew up amongst the vines. As he went deeper into the wine world, he realised he had a major soft spot for natural wines. So, in 2007, he bought five vineyards around Sopron, a town in northwest Hungary that used to be the capital of Burgenland. Now, he's all about keeping it low-intervention and authentic in every bottle.

Despite Peter’s massive stature, wide frame and large hands, he crafts with a deftness and gentility that inspire. The Sag Olazsrielsing is grown on the ashen slopes of a long dead volcano, pulling ancient fire from the ground in the form of mineral deposits and nutrients that thrive in this once desolate environment. Using low-yield, hand-picked and basket-pressed grapes, this wine expresses both the fire of one person’s passion to make exceedingly drinkable wines as well as the inner fires of a rock floating innocuously through the milky way.

Shiraz 2020

Kalleske Moppa

Australia

In the flaming red clays and soils of Barossa, Kalleske Estate stands as a true testament to the adage that if you take care of the earth, it will take care of you. Running the first fully biodynamic property in Barossa since 1998, the Kalleske family are first stewards of soil, and secondly wizards of wine. Their Greenock and Moppa vineyards produce the most-sought after organic Shiraz in Australia, and judicious use of wood (or occasionally even without) ensures a pure expression from soil to grape and grape to bottle.

Moppa perfectly reflects the Earth theme. A wine that’s seriously delicious and fresh: think plums and blueberries, with a hint of licorice and sweet spice. It’s got that chill vibe, like the fruit, vine, and earth are just doing their thing. So easy to drink and packed with flavour, but not basic at all - there’s a lot happening to keep you hooked.
